Used BMW vs.
Certified Pre-Owned. Find your fit.

Here's how to compare both paths—and find a BMW you'll feel good about bringing home.

Start here

Two ways to buy.
Plenty to like about both.

A Certified Pre-Owned BMW is a used BMW that qualifies for BMW's certification program, completes its inspection and approval process, and includes BMW-backed limited protection.

A non-certified used BMW should be evaluated on its own condition, history, equipment and coverage. Both deserve a place on your shopping list.

Keep your options open

Pre-Owned BMW

Have your eye on a particular interior, a favorite model or a little more room for the family? Shopping the full pre-owned selection gives you more possibilities across model years, mileage and budgets.

The right used BMW can bring together the features you want at a price that makes sense for you.

Put added protection first

BMW Certified

If the manufacturer's certification process and added limited protection are priorities, start with BMW Certified. Ask to see the certification paperwork and coverage dates alongside the vehicle's equipment and price.

When two BMWs are otherwise similar, those benefits may help you decide.

The practical differences

Let's put them
side by side.

Start with the cars themselves. A badge is useful information, but the mileage, service history, options and price still belong in the conversation.

Your selection A wider potential range of model years, mileage and price points. Vehicles that meet BMW's certification requirements.

Your priorities, your BMW

What matters
most to you?

Open the statement that sounds like you. We'll give you a useful place to start.

“I want the most choice within my budget.”

Start with the full pre-owned inventory. Compare equipment, condition and service records, then ask about coverage on your favorites. A non-certified BMW may help you find the configuration you really want.

“Added repair protection matters to me.”

Start with BMW Certified and review its written terms. Ask what is covered, what is excluded and when coverage ends. If a non-certified BMW also catches your eye, compare any protection available for that vehicle.

“I've narrowed it down to two BMWs.”

Compare out-the-door prices, mileage, options, tire and brake condition, service records and coverage dates. Then drive both if they're available. The right fit often becomes clearer behind the wheel.

Know what comes with it

Coverage, without
the confusion.

Buying a pre-owned BMW does not restart its original warranty. Before you choose, ask us to confirm the exact coverage for the vehicle you're considering.

BMW Certified limited protection

1 year.
Unlimited miles.

Begins after the original 4-year/50,000-mile BMW New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty expires. The original warranty ends when its time or mileage limit is reached, whichever comes first.

Confirm the original in-service date, current mileage and protection start and end dates for your specific BMW.

What about a non-certified BMW?

It may still have factory coverage remaining. Ask us to check the VIN and coverage dates, and explain any additional protection available for that vehicle.

Maintenance is a separate question.

CPO protection does not cover every ownership expense. BMW's published exclusions include scheduled maintenance, tires, brake pads and rotors, and other listed items. Confirm any separate maintenance plan or included service benefit.

Make the test drive count

Four things worth a closer look.

01 / HISTORY

Get to know the car.

Review the vehicle history report, available service records and inspection findings. Ask about anything that needs explaining.

02 / CONDITION

Look at what's next.

Check tire tread, brake condition and upcoming service. For Albany and Saratoga winters, talk about tire suitability, too.

03 / COVERAGE

Get the specifics.

Compare coverage dates, mileage limits, exclusions and any deductibles. Review optional protection costs separately.

04 / EVERYDAY LIFE

Make yourself at home.

Adjust the seat, check cargo space and try the controls. Picture your Northway commute and your next weekend away.

A few more answers

Good questions.
Straight answers.

Still weighing your options? These are useful questions to bring along.

Is every used BMW at a BMW dealership Certified?

No. BMW Certified is a specific program designation. Check the listing and certification paperwork for the vehicle you are considering.

Is a non-certified used BMW still worth considering?

Yes. A non-certified BMW can be a good fit when its condition, history, features and price match your needs. Review the individual vehicle and its coverage instead of deciding by the badge alone.

Is BMW Certified worth a higher price?

It depends on the vehicles and your priorities. Compare the price difference, mileage, equipment, condition and written protection terms. Certification is one part of the overall purchase.

Does a used BMW have any factory warranty left?

It may. Ask BMW of Latham to verify remaining coverage using the vehicle's VIN, original in-service date and mileage.
