How to Reset the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) in an X Series BMW

How to Reset BMW Tire Pressure Monitor System

How to Reset Your BMW Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM)

If your BMW tire pressure warning light is on after inflating your tires, a reset is usually required. The Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) system needs to relearn the correct baseline pressures. Below are step-by-step instructions based on your BMW’s model year and iDrive version. If you’re in Latham, Troy, Schenectady, Saratoga Springs, Clifton Park, or anywhere in the Capital Region of New York, BMW of Latham is always here to help if the warning doesn’t clear.

For Most Newer BMW Models (2017+ with iDrive 6, 7, or 8)

  1. Start the engine (do not use accessory mode).
  2. On the iDrive screen, select CAR.
  3. Choose Vehicle Status.
  4. Select Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM).
  5. Choose Perform Reset or Reset Tire Pressure.
  6. Confirm the reset when prompted.
  7. Drive for at least 10–15 minutes above 20 mph.

The system will automatically relearn the tire pressures while driving. Once complete, the display will show TPM Active.

For Older BMW X Models (2011–2016 with iDrive 4 or 5)

  1. Turn on the ignition or start the engine.
  2. Select Vehicle Info or Vehicle Status.
  3. Scroll to Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM).
  4. Select Reset and confirm.
  5. Drive above 20 mph until the system completes calibration.

For Pre-iDrive, Button-Based BMW Systems (Early 2000s Models)

  1. Turn the ignition to the ON position (engine off).
  2. Locate the TPMS reset button (commonly near the gear lever, under the dash, or inside the glovebox).
  3. Press and hold the button until the TPMS light begins to blink.
  4. Start the engine and drive until the warning light clears.

Important Tire Pressure Reset Reminders

  • Always check and set tire pressures to BMW’s recommended PSI before resetting (found on the driver’s door jamb).
  • The reset process does not inflate your tires — it only recalibrates the system.
  • Resetting should be done after tire inflation, rotation, or replacement.

If the Tire Pressure Warning Comes Back

If the warning light returns shortly after a reset, it may indicate:

  • A slow tire leak or puncture
  • A failing TPMS sensor battery (common after 5–7 years)
  • A damaged or faulty TPMS sensor

In these cases, a professional inspection is recommended to prevent uneven tire wear or further issues.
