BMW Extended Warranty vs. Maintenance Plans. Know the difference.

The quick answer

Repairs and upkeep.
Different jobs.

A BMW Vehicle Service Contract addresses covered component failures. A BMW maintenance plan addresses eligible scheduled services. Buying one does not automatically give you the other.

“Extended warranty” is a common shopping term. BMW's extended repair coverage is offered through Vehicle Service Contracts, rather than an extension of the original new-vehicle warranty.

For covered repairs

Vehicle Service Contract

Think about a component that stops working and needs repair. A Vehicle Service Contract, or VSC, may help with that expense when the part, failure and repair meet the agreement's terms.

BMW offers Powertrain and Platinum coverage options. The covered components, exclusions and deductible deserve a closer look before you choose.

For eligible maintenance

Ultimate Care plans

Think scheduled oil service on a gasoline BMW, brake fluid service and other maintenance your vehicle needs at the appropriate intervals.

BMW Ultimate Care covers eligible scheduled maintenance. Available upgrades and extensions can change the covered items or coverage period. The exact plan matters.

What are you
planning for?

Start with the expense you want help managing. Then look at the agreement that addresses it, including what you would still pay yourself.

Make it practical

What if this
happens to my BMW?

Open an example to see which coverage to ask about. These examples explain the categories, rather than promise a claim will be covered.

“My BMW says an oil service is due.”

Start with maintenance coverage. On a gasoline or plug-in hybrid BMW, an eligible oil service may fall under an active maintenance plan. An all-electric BMW does not need engine oil changes.

“A component has failed.”

Ask the service team to diagnose the problem and check active factory, Certified or Vehicle Service Contract coverage. The cause, component and agreement determine eligibility. A maintenance plan alone is not repair coverage.

“My brake pads have worn down.”

Ask which maintenance plan you have. Standard Ultimate Care excludes brake pads and discs. Ultimate Care+ can add specified wear-item benefits, subject to its terms and the vehicle's eligibility. Brake fluid service is a different maintenance item.

“I hit a pothole and damaged a tire.”

Ask whether you have separate Tire & Wheel Protection and whether the damage qualifies. Do not assume road-hazard damage is included in either a maintenance plan or a Vehicle Service Contract.

What's changing?

The names sound similar, but coverage can differ. Ask for the full plan name and an itemized explanation of what it adds to the coverage you already have.

Standard BMW Ultimate Care

3 years /
36,000 miles.

Eligible scheduled maintenance on new BMW vehicles, whichever limit comes first. Coverage is measured from the vehicle's original in-service date.

Confirm the applicable model-year booklet and remaining coverage for your BMW, especially when buying pre-owned.

Scheduled services

Depending on the vehicle and service schedule, eligible work can include oil and filter service, brake fluid and cabin filters. Services must qualify under the plan; an early or extra service is not automatically included.

Upgrades and extensions

BMW Ultimate Care+ can add specified wear items, such as eligible brake pads and wiper blades. Maintenance extensions may also be available. Ask what is covered, when it ends and whether your BMW qualifies.

Find the right fit

Start with your BMW.
Then compare the plans.

Keeping your BMW for years of Northway commutes? Driving mostly around Latham and Albany? Your mileage and ownership plans are useful starting points for the conversation.

01 / CURRENT COVERAGE

Know what you have.

Bring your VIN, mileage and existing agreements. Ask us to confirm active benefits before comparing anything additional.

02 / OWNERSHIP PLANS

Think a few years ahead.

Consider how long you expect to keep the car and how much you drive. Ask for exact end dates and mileage limits.

03 / PRICE & TERMS

Compare the full picture.

Request the total price, deductible, exclusions and any cancellation or transfer terms. Ask when coverage actually begins.

04 / YOUR PRIORITIES

Choose what helps you.

For maintenance, compare the plan with expected eligible service costs. For repair protection, consider the covered risks and your budget.

A stated coverage term does not necessarily mean that many additional years from the day you buy the plan. Have the dates confirmed in writing.
